Why?

Why do evangelical preachers quote scripture at 50 times the rate that Jesus did?

Maybe because they are confident that angels will bear them up lest they dash their feet against a stone.

(Wait ... who quoted that one to Jesus?)

The Bible says that Jesus "grew in wisdom", so did He have to learn Scripture like every other little Jewish boy, or was it written on His heart? (Serious question - I never "learned" this one & Keith just made me wonder!

Keith, you bring up a great point. I wonder what Jesus' quote per word ratio is against Satan's. Since Satan directly speaks so little, I bet it is higher than that of Jesus. Hmmmm.

Beaner, my first idea is that Jesus grew in wisdom like he grew physically and socially, like the rest of that verse you refer to says (now here I am referring to scripture). So, I am guessing he was learning scripture like every other Jewsih boy.

Which leads me to clarification: I am not anti-scripture, but I am exceedingly anti-I-quoted-scripture-so-whatever-I-say-is truth. For far too long preachers have cut and pasted dozens of scriptures together, called it a Biblical sermon and smugly "settled" truth right there at the pulpit.

Things haven't changed a lot in 2 thousand years.

Thanks! I like the example of the Bereans. Can't you see them after Paul preached, looking back over Scripture to see if what he said was REALLY what God said?
