The salt sucks the water out of the slug. If there's not enough salt, it won't kill it.
How about this one (which makes more sense because humans do it too): Slugs will drink beer until they die from alcohol poisoning.

Love the trophy picture. There should be rewards for suffering. I say that because I just got back from an adult league game where we lost 8 to 1. I was playing keeper on 7 of those goals. I felt like I deserved battle pay! Had to settle for an ice pack.
