Loneliness is a ghost who lurks. It's not scary like a monster that can do violence. Rather, it is a Nothing that replaces Something. Anything it can replace, anything allowed to be released will be filled with this Nothing.
Loneliness can come without announcement and be present for long stretches of time undetected. Like an invisible leech, it can drain a person of the very thing that gives life. Loneliness is a parasite that kills slowly. It can be ignored by distraction into media and technology. It can be ignored by ritual, habit, and addiction.
I meet a lot of lonely people. You do too.
What can challenge loneliness? Meaning.
People must experience meaning in their lives. People cannot experience meaning in solitude. Friendship is the antidote to loneliness. Not aquaintances, not associates, not membership, not the number of people around - friendship.
Friendship is meaning.

It is moving beyond the superficial that is hard work. And while I long for it in my own life I often find that I am lacking because I don't put in the work....

Hmmmm, that sounds right. I really want to believe that. Finding the right kind of friends...isn't easy though. Thanks for the post. I may even copy this to save it and keep thinking about it. I thought solitude was the cure for loneliness...but you may be right.
Solitude is good, but not permanent solitude. We cannot be asocial. We are social. Even introverts like me are social people.

Friend is an answer to answer that takes away lonliness from a human...
a persons life revolves around love or a friend, with out love there is no meaning of life and things a man could earn or work out. What use is it when you dont find love..
the Bible says "God is Love" and "There is no greater friend than Him that gives His life for His friends". Evenry mans heart earns for a Love that can replace this lonliness... Jesus is the answer, He being God, Loved us so much that he gave his life for us. He can change our life fill with his Love...
